Haozhan (Gerrard Street) | Cantonese, Thai, Malaysian & Pekinese
When Jimmy Kong opened Haozhan in 2007, he sprinkled a smattering of fine-dining fairy dust across Chinatown, courtesy of former Hakkasan chef, Chee Long Cheong.
With an emphasis on innovative takes on Cantonese and Pekinese classics, Haozhan’s dishes showcase contemporary flair and flavour in equal measures. You’ll even find a cheeky Thai or Malay dish thrown in for good measure.
“Roast Duck Specialist” declares the restaurant canopy outside and, indeed, Haozhan is one of Chinatown’s finest purveyors of expertly roasted BBQ duck – crisp, with a moist fleshy middle.
Expect a diverse selection of regional Chinese favourites such as Lobster with Chilli Sauce or Chicken with Ginger and Spring Onion, but with a more of a fresh, modern presentation.
For those with a more adventurous palate, opt for one of the many Chef’s Specials, where Haozhan’s dishes really shine. Lamb Cutlet Genghis Khan Style certainly would satisfy the Mongolian conqueror’s appetite and Deep Fried Prawn with Almond Flake in Wasabi Dressing is a saucy little Japanese inspired number.
If you like your dishes with attitude, head to Haozhan.
